Human Trafficking

The Human Trafficking (HT) Committee observes, shares information, alerts its members of upcoming HT events and provides reports to the local League membership to inform them of the overwhelming world of Human Trafficking, both sex and labor. Through attendance at workshops, forums and meetings, LWVGT maintains a presence within local HT organizations.

Locally and state-wide, data on Human Trafficking is rather sketchy, and unfortunately, a significant grant that resulted in important interaction and data reporting activity between CODAC Health, Tucson and the Tucson Police Department has been depleted.

Local and federal law enforcement indicates that sex trafficking is happening in Arizona at an alarming rate. Sex trafficking is estimated to be a $12 billion per year industry in Arizona. The income potential and the use of technology are reasons why. According to a study by STIR, 78,000 men in Phoenix are online sex ad customers. (No stats available for Tucson.) Gone are the days when prostitution was isolated to certain areas of town. While street-level prostitution still occurs, prostitution is more frequently facilitated by the internet.
