Observer Corps

The Observer Corps is a long-standing tradition in the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson (LWVGT) and in Leagues across the country. League members who volunteer with the Observer Corps observe the meetings of local public governing bodies and then submit a brief report which is shared on the LWVGT website. The objective is to ensure transparency in government and keep League members, and the public, informed about the issues and actions of local government that impact our lives. The time committment is about 4-6 hours per month.

Members of the Observer Corps do not speak at public meetings unless requesting clarification, and they are not spokespersons for the League.

The Observer Corps currently monitors these governing bodies:

  • Pima County Board of Supervisors
  • Tucson City Council
  • Marana Town Council
  • Commission on Equitable Housing and Development
  • Pima Community College Governing Board
  • Tucson Unified School District
  • Regional Transportation Authority

We are looking for volunteers to observe these governing bodies:

  • School Boards (please email for list of School Boards)
  • Tucson Community Police Advisory Review Board
  • Green Valley Council
  • Sahuarita Town Council
  • Other governing bodies of towns and villages in Pima County (please email for a list)
  • Other Boards and Commissions attached to local units of government (please email for list)

As a volunteer with the Observer Corps, you will:

  • attend a training to become familiar with Arizona’s Open Meetings Laws and review the positions of LWV of Greater Tucson;
  • attend monthly meetings of a local government body, either in person or online;
  • take notes, complete a summary report of the proceedings, and submit your report to the committee chair; and
  • attend meetings of the Observer Corps committee.

If you are interested in becoming a LWVGT Observer or you want more information, contact us at observercorps@lwvtucson.com or call 520-327-7652.
