| President's Message
from
Emily Bridson | | | Greater Tucson League Members,
Have you been feeling anxious or uncertain about the recent political events? I decided to educate myself by reading an article in which politicians and scholars debated whether the US Constitution could withstand present challenges to its provisions. Those who celebrated its strength argued that it had survived the War of 1812, in which the White House was burned to the ground, and the Civil War. Reading the article made me feel better because I was educating myself and taking control of my fears. I have never had to really think about what my life would be like without the US Constitution. It has been scary and overwhelming to consider.
Psychologists advise us that worrying about future events beyond our control is unhealthy. What is in my control are the actions I can take today:
- I choose to reject the paralysis of fear.
- I choose to work with people who care about our democracy and voting rights.
- I choose to spend my dollars on the products of companies whose values align with mine.
I will continue to be active with the League. In April, I will begin my term as President of the League of Women Voters of Arizona. League members, we all know, enjoy two important benefits: meaningful personal relationships and the ability to act and create change. We can lean into the League and the friends we’ve found here while pursuing the goals of a common cause.
I am sharing these ideas because we are going through unprecedented political and social turmoil. Members tell me that they are having a hard time knowing what to do and that they feel frozen or stuck. I suggest focusing on one area you are passionate about and just do something. One of the key lessons I learned in business school was to keep making decisions and moving forward. Setbacks may occur, but progress will be made if you keep moving forward. | The worst thing you can do as a community leader is to become stuck by not making decisions.
If uncertainty is causing you to feel stuck, I am personally inviting you to two upcoming important League events:
On Friday, March 7th, Issues & Eggs will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton-Reid Park, beginning at 8 am. This is our annual fundraiser and the topic this year is "Safe Lives, Safe Homes: Examining the Connection Between Domestic Violence and Housing." Your support guarantees we will be able to fund the important work that happens each and every day in our communities. You can still buy tickets and register! The deadline is Sunday, March 2nd. Register HERE.
Our annual business meeting will be held on Friday, April 25th at Pima Community College’s Desert Vista campus. The meeting will begin at 10 am. We have an inspiring keynote speaker, Dr. Delores Duran-Cerda, who will join us to share some of her insights as a leader in higher education. She is the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at Pima Community College. You can have a say in how the League is run and meet new friends. Registration is required and you can sign up HERE.
If we lend a hand to one another, collaborate, and take action on vital proects, the League will persist another 105 years to empower voters and defend democracy.
Let’s lean into kindness, hope, and action today.
Thank you,
Emily Bridson

When: March 18 at 10:00 am
Where: 5300 E. Los Reales Road, in Tucson, AZ 85756
The Environmental Issues Committee is thinking about trash. After you put your bin on the curb, do you know where your trash goes?
We will tour the Tucson Landfill site at the Los Reales Sustainability Campus. This site serves both private and commercial trash haulers as well as individuals and includes Tucson and Pima County.
All LWVGT members are welcome to attend.
| Every day, over 2300 tons of solid waste is delivered to this facility! If you would like to learn more about the trash stream that your big waste bin is a part of, please join us. It is located south of Los Reales Rd. at Craycroft Rd. Take I-10 east, and then turn south on Craycroft to reach the site.
If you plan to join us, please RSVP. We need to have an estimate of how many will attend.
The tour will include an information session at the administration building and then a driving tour of the site. For the driving tour, we follow our guide in private cars. We will carpool from the landfill headquarters, to reduce the number of vehicles in the group. It should be an eye-opening experience! To follow up on this topic, our meeting on April 15 will be a discussion of the book Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash, by Edward Humes.
