President
We are always busy and February was no exception!

Thanks to our Public Programs Committee for hosting the information session on Medicare WISeR. If you missed it, don’t forget that recordings are accessible HERE on our YouTube channel.

Thanks to our Membership Committee for the successful all-member meeting and brunch attended by more than 50 people. Attendees were brought up to speed on local election laws by County Attorney Daniel Jurkowitz's presentation, which included a robust Q & A. We hope to continue hosting two in-person member events annually as they are well attended and appreciated.

Thanks to our Community Violence Prevention Committee for staying on top of important issues related to domestic violence and gun violence prevention for our community. With the guidance of this committee, the LWVGT continues to weigh in on these issues with our elected leaders. This is an important part of the advocacy work we can do at the local level.

Congratulations to our Voter Services team for being awarded a $1000 Youth Voter Registration Project grant that will support our efforts to register high school students throughout Pima County. We also thank Voter Services for hosting an information session on the Regional Transportation Authority ballot. A recording is accessible HERE on our YouTube channel.

Our LWVGT Annual Meeting will be held Saturday April 25th from 8:30am to 12:30pm at the Junior League of Tucson. This is an opportunity for members to weigh in on important issues like policies, bylaws, budget, and advocacy. We also vote in our new leadership team. This year we are kicking off the meeting with a special guest speaker you won’t want to miss!

The Call, containing all of the relevant information on the Annual Meeting, will be sent out the last week of March. I look forward to seeing many of you there. Please be sure to register early, as space is limited. Find meeting location information and register HERE.

Thanks for all you do,
Betsy B.

DVFTAP: What It Is and Why It Matters

The Domestic Violence Firearms Technical Assistance Project (DVFTAP) was developed with federal grant funding by Judge Wendy Million, who presides over the Domestic Violence Court for the City of Tucson. DVFTAP is designed to increase safety for domestic violence survivors in high-risk cases, to strengthen the court system and enforcement of gun surrenders, and to improve communication among the courts, law enforcement, and organizations serving domestic violence survivors.

After grants for DVFTAP expired in January 2026, the Tucson City Council provided funding through June 30, 2026. It is critically important that they extend funding in the amount of $150,000 for the rest of the 2026-27 budget. These funds would be used for the following:

* Funding Tuscon Police Department (TPD) overtime to serve Protective Orders allowing the surrender of firearms and ensuring the tracking of orders served and the number of firearms recovered;

* Providing a full-time Emerge advocate to assist high-risk cases in court, connect survivors with services and accompany TPD when Protective Orders are being served;

* Coordinating communication among courts, law enforcement, and survivor organizations and entering data in National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), the national database of prohibited possessors.

What can you do? Contact the Tucson Mayor and Tucson City Council HERE.  Stress the importance of budgeting for DVFTAP.  To urge the increase in funding and expansion of DVFTAP to county courts contact the Pima County Board of Supervisors HERE.

NOTE:  When contacting local elected officials, your support must be as members of the community, not as League members.

Legislative Lobby Day
Wednesday, February 25, 2026
Over fifty LWV members from all over the state of Arizona gathered in Phoenix to participate in Legislative Lobby Day. Did you know that LWVGT is one of five local leagues? The others are: LWV of Central Yavapai County, LWV of Metropolitan Phoenix, LWV of Northwest Maricopa County, and LWV of Northern Arizona.

LWVAZ organized the program, and helped sign up members to the Right to Speak program (RTS). If you are unfamiliar with RTS, which is convenient way to comment on AZ Legislative bills, you can read about it HERE.

We heard from Tearanie Chinn from the nonpartisan organization All Voting is Local. Their website offers resources, information in Spanish, and more.

Your LWVGT members sat in on the House and Senate floor votes and dropped off our list of 2026 top advocacy priorities to several legislators.
