Advocacy Committee
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization, meaning that it does not support or oppose any political party or candidate for public office. However, the League does advocate for public policy and social issues based on the positions it has developed through study, discussion, and a formalized position adoption process. Positions may be taken on issues at the local, state and national levels of the League.
Advocacy takes many forms including lobbying, tracking legislation and governmental issues, testifying and commenting on proposed legislation, writing letters to the editor, and initiating legal action. The Advocacy Committee leads LWVGT advocacy activities and coordinates with the League of Women Voters of Arizona on statewide issues.
LWVGT Advocacy Committee members provide advocacy training, coordinate meetings with our state legislators, and participate with League members from throughout Arizona in an annual League Lobby Day at the Arizona State Legislature.
A major focus for the League is Making Democracy Work, which means working to expand voter access, fighting voter suppression, ensuring fair redistricting, and limiting the influence of money in politics.
LWVGT Advocacy Committee members may also study, discuss and develop League positions on other issues. Current Advocacy subcommittees include Reproductive Rights, Gun Safety, Water Policy, and Medical Aid in Dying. Adopted positions are the foundation of our advocacy activities.
