Advocacy and Activism

Advocacy and Activism is our nonpartisan grassroots activism work at the local, state, and national level. Our advocacy work is rooted in our public policy positions that are researched and voted on by members at all levels.

Marketing - Getting Our Message Out

Turning Out Voters

"Turning Out Voters" focuses on assisting voter registration, providing information about voting and elections, and increasing voter turnout. Our nonpartisan policy extends to all services and materials. These activities fall under the League's Voter Services Committee and its subcommittees. When you check an interest under Turning Out Voters, you can expect to be contacted directly about participation. If you elect to participate, orientation/training, supplies and support will be provided. Once members are contacted and connected to activities, their names may be removed from these listings, however, all active members are listed on the Committees page under Voter Services Committee and its subcommittees.

Coordinate all of the League's forums. Determine which forums the League will sponsor for that season. Train and oversee the Moderators and Leaders for specific forums. Interested League members will shadow the current Chairs to become familiar with the work and responsibilities.

Each individual forum has a team of members who receive training, plan and produce the forum event, filling these positions: a Leader to coordinate the event including selecting a date, contacting the candidates, and preparing the forum team; a Moderator and Assistant Moderator to prepare the script and research questions for the forum; a Timer to monitor and control the length of time candidates respond to questions; and a Question Sorter to deliver questions from the audience to the Moderator.

Assist in planning and carrying out virtual forums that spotlight candidates and issues prior to elections. Volunteers are needed to fill the same positions as for regular public forum events and serve as back-up in case a regular team member's internet connection is disrupted. A Tech Person is also needed to manage the Zoom webinar including reserving webinar times, sending links, and facilitating a successful virtual forum.

The Guide to Voting in Pima County is an English/Spanish brochure outlining the rules for voter registration and voting in Pima County. The brochure is revised as needed when rules change. Volunteers may consult with the Pima County Recorder’s Office on content, edit content, revise graphics, or provide Spanish translation. Volunteers are also needed to coordinate with the graphic designer and printer, and assist with distribution to libraries and other locations in Pima County.

League members update A Citizen’s Directory of Elected Officials after every local, state, federal, and tribal election. We publish and distribute this booklet throughout Pima County and post it on the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson website. Volunteers can choose to do research (e.g. contact information for newly elected officials), edit the document, or coordinate with the graphic designer and printer. Volunteers also assist with distribution of the Directory.

As a Voter Registration Team member, you will have opportunities to plan and work at events and locations where you will assist eligible voters to register or renew their registration, and provide nonpartisan information about voting and elections. The League focuses on community events, schools, naturalization ceremonies, and senior housing. Members who sign up will be contacted to attend a required training session. Trained volunteers receive email notices inviting them to assist with upcoming events, and new volunteers always work with experienced members. Coordinators are also needed.

RSV is a project that aims to encourage registered voters to cast their vote. It is active in the weeks before elections. Past RSV activities have included phone banking, postcard writing, distribution of information packets, and targeted media campaigns, especially where voter turnout has historically been low. All League members are invited to participate, and those who sign up will be notified when planning begins. Training is provided.

Members who have experience or an interest in community outreach are encouraged to sign up to help the Voter Services Committee to develop partnerships with nonpartisan community organizations in Pima County. Those partnerships may lead to joint ventures to register voters, disseminate information about voting and elections, conduct candidate and issue forums, and increase voter turnout.

Ready, Set, Vote! is the League's user-friendly website that provides useful information about voter registration, voting, and elections in Pima County. Volunteers work as a team to maintain the website, including researching and contributing content.

Vote 411 is a national League of Women Voters website that local Leagues maintain in their geographic areas. Voters can find nonpartisan information about the candidates and ballot initiatives that they will be voting on in upcoming elections.
