Observer Corps Report: Pima County Board of Supervisors

Large Development Approved
Homeless Count of January 24, 2023 reviewed

The Pima County Board of Supervisors Approved:

•  The development of the former Quail Canyon Golf Course that had been purchased by a California based developer.  The plan is to build 120 2-story homes and 7 3-story apartment buildings (210 units) on 30 acres of the 53-acre property.  Over 50 individuals requested to speak on the proposal. The plan was approved by the Supervisors 4-1.

• An overage of the Sherriff’s Department’s budget was approved after an explanation by Sherriff Nanos. Motion was approved 3-2.

Homelessness Initiatives Update

County committees are focused on 3 areas:  Criminal Justice (transition center), Housing, and General / Mental Health Care.
Vision is to support transition to permanent housing.  
City of Tucson has had the Housing First in place since Oct 2021.  

Attachment to the agenda is a 30-page detailed report of the homeless count on Jan 24th.  The report shares there are about 1,100 unsheltered homeless in the county. The report includes detailed information on the identified homeless population and lists 80 agencies and the number of beds available and how many were occupied on Jan 24th.

Introduction to the report states: “The number of persons experiencing homelessness in Pima County has increased significantly during and following the COVID -19 pandemic.  This is in large part due to the rising rental costs, a shortage of affordable housing, overall reduction in shelter bed capacity compared to pre-pandemic years, and systemic inequities.

Elections Integrity Commission 2022 Annual Report

Presented by Elections Commission Committee Chair.   The report had unanimous committee approval.   
Report highlights:  the process worked well, issues were identified and are being addressed, there will be software updates and additional trainings, clock was places to establish movement in the 24-hour streaming of the tabulation room, e-books and printers will be certified.

The meeting went from 9:00 am to 3:40 pm
