Observer Corps Report: Tucson Commission on Equitable Housing and Development

Government body: Tucson Commission on Equitable Housing and Development (CEHD), established on July 7, 2020 by Ordinance No. 11760. The CEHD reviews, investigates, and recommends actions to the Mayor and City Council, based on research, data, and inclusive input, to increase housing affordability.

• Minutes from June 1, 2023 Meeting

Other Meeting Highlights:

• Affordable Housing: Jim Tofel, Chair, gave report. There are 10,826 Affordable Housing Unit in inventory. Roughly 600 units over next four years will not be required to remain affordable as they reach the 30-year limit. 450 units per year are needed/to be added to replenish existing stock and handle additional demand.    

•. The Commission is interested in hearing from proponents and developers of tiny homes, including those built from scratch and those made from shipping containers. These presentations will be made in a way that does not violate procurement codes.

• The Commission is still interested in working with a strategic planning consultant, and various options were discussed.

• Two of the subcommittees did not have a quorum at their last meetings and so no reports were made.

The next meeting of the full Commission is August 3, 2023
